Welcome to Home Economics. I’m Aziz Sunderji, and I’ll be writing to you a few times a week.
Before this, I spent 15 years in finance—most of it at Barclays Investment Bank in London and New York, where I ran an emerging markets strategy team—and worked as a graphics reporter at The Wall Street Journal. Home Economics is where those two halves of my career come together.
My view is that the most reliable way to understand the world is through data, and that charts—done well—are the best way to communicate what the data shows. Every article I publish is built around a single chart, with a short explanation of what it means, and why it matters.
The newsletter started as a housing publication and that’s still the largest part of what I write about—affordability, demographics, policy, and the politics of affordability.
But over the past year I’ve expanded into the broader American economy: tech and AI infrastructure, migration, work, happiness, and how people find it. If you came here through Derek Thompson’s work, you’ll find a lot of the same questions, answered through charts.
